Introduction

About The Author.

Hi there, let me introduce myself. My name is Nicola Uglow and I am a 43-year-old married mother of two teenagers. I am also a fully qualified primary school teacher, dyslexia support tutor and experienced Reading /Maths and English tutor. I have over 20 years experience teaching in state and primary schools and have privately tutored hundreds of pupils.

Having helped many, many dyslexic and non-dyslexic children to master their times tables, often when all other methods had failed, I decided to offer my programme 'Teach Your Child The Times Tables in Ten Easy Steps!' for sale.

It is written as a detailed step-by-step guide and is therefore like having your own personal tutor at all times. If you follow the advice to the letter, your child will understand the concept of multiplication and learn his/her tables as facts, having practiced them in a cumulative and challenging manner, in just a matter of weeks.

*Please note that this is neither an innovative nor ‘gimmicky' approach, but a tried and tested formula which de-mystifies multiplication and uses multisensory methods and memory hooks to help support memory deficits and misunderstandings.

Teach Your Child the Times Tables (1-12) in Ten Easy Steps! is easy-to follow and not particularly time consuming, but it does require patience, persistence and praise on your part.

You will be rewarded for your efforts with a happy and confident budding-mathematician!

However, a word of caution *Please do not skip any of the steps, even if you feel that your child knows some of the earlier tables well enough! Each stage is included to introduce and check that your child understands the‘concept' of multiplication so that the learning of ‘facts' is embedded in meaning.

Also remember, some lucky children seem able to learn their tables with little effort but most children do not. The vast majority require the structured exposure of this type of programme and lots of practice. Please be patient and understanding, however long it takes!

STEP 1 The ‘1 x' Table

You will need:

a) 12 plastic/paper cups

b) 12 marbles/buttons/counters or sweets

c) One set of the ‘1-12 Number Cards' (see Appendix 1

- please cut these out and mount on card before use)

d) The ‘1 x' Table Cards (see Appendix 2

- please cut these out and mount on card before use)

e) The Practice Your Tables Grid 1. (see Appendix 3)

Lay out the number cards 1-12 in front of you and your child.

Put a cup in front of each number card. (Always refer to these cups as ‘pots' and later substitute the word ‘lots' as in "6 pots/lots of 1 is 6.")

Ask your child to put a marble/counter/sweet into pot 1 and say "1 pot with 1 marble is 1 marble altogether; so 1 pot of 1 is 1."

Ask your child to put a marble into a second pot and say "2 pots with 1 marble in each is 2 marbles altogether, so 2 pots of 1 is 2"

Ask your child to put a marble into a third pot and say "How many marbles in three pots?" She/he will count 3 and you will say "yes, that's right, 3 pots of 1 is 3"

Continue in this way up to 12 marbles/pots and occasionally substitute the word ‘lots' instead of ‘pots'.

Next, go along the row of pots and whilst pointing at the number say "1 lot of 1 is 1, 2 lots of 1 is 2" etc and lay the correct sum in front of it (e.g. 1 x 1 =1 and explain that the x sign means ‘lots of' and we call it a ‘times' sign- so sometimes we say "1 times 1 is 1" instead of "1 lot of 1 is 1".)

Now fire a few questions at your child to see if he/she has caught on.

"What is 5 lots of 1?", "What is 12 lots of one?", "What is 6 x 1?", "What are 9, 1's?" - vary the language you use (pot/lots/times).

Finally, help your child to complete the Practice Your Tables Grid 1 (both horizontally and vertically and point out that 1 x 5 is the same as 5 x 1 etc.

Give lots of praise and acknowledge the fact that she/he now knows her/his

‘1 x Table'.

Test her/him periodically throughout the day.

Note From The Author:

This works! It has worked for EVERY one of the hundreds of children I have taught over the last ten years, WITHOUT FAIL and some have been severely dyslexic/dyscalculic too. None of this matters if you take time to set the scene, provide the motivation and the patience and then the praise.

I'll show you how!

You can buy it now for £9.97 using Paypal but the download button isnt working so email nikki@bcuproperty.co.uk and I will raise a paypal invoice for you and send the ebook as an email attachment.

At last someone who makes learning seem like a game and not a chore.

The things we learn stay with us much longer if we can use all our senses in the process. This method is clearly and precisely explained in a fun way which makes it a joy and it works.

I love your approach and that it includes giving lots of praise. I think this is a step we forget sometimes in our quest to teach.
